  16. <p>After a week's worth of tributes, Johnny Carson says his last
  17. good-night
  18. </p>
  19. <p>    It was the week that TV fans thought would never come. A year
  20. after announcing his intention to retire as host of the Tonight
  21. show at the end of his 30th season, Johnny Carson stepped
  22. through the curtains at NBC'S Burbank studios for the last four
  23. times. He made wisecracks about Dan Quayle, chatted with guests
  24. like Tony Bennett and Robin Williams, and modestly accepted a
  25. nightly shower of accolades and standing ovations. The
  26. sentimental high point came on Thursday night, when Carson's
  27. final guest, Bette Midler, plied him with musical tributes,
  28. closing the show with a rendition of One for My Baby (and One
  29. More for the Road) as the camera showed Carson looking on,
  30. misty-eyed.

  32. <p>    For his final show, Carson dispensed with guests and spent
  33. the hour reminiscing and screening clips from past years. "And
  34. so it has come to this," he said, perched on a stool at the
  35. end. He thanked sidekicks Ed McMahon and Doc Severinsen and
  36. expressed a hope that if he returns to TV, viewers will "be as
  37. gracious in inviting me into your homes as you have been." Then,
  38. fighting back tears, he said simply, "I bid you a very heartfelt
  39. good-night."
